Abstract

This chapter examines the implications of implementing the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement, especially as it affects developing countries, and perhaps conflicts with other international agreements and norms, and patent systems. It further clarifies the impact of TRIPS on the protection of agricultural biotechnology, including the extent to which exceptions under TRIPs may permit consideration of other social policy concerns, such as biodiversity and human rights. The chapter offers strategies for reconciling TRIPS with other agreements.
